Dolly Parton’s popular song, 9 to 5, details bleary-eyed individuals tumbling out of bed and stumbling to the kitchen to pour themselves a cup of ambition. While this tune accurately depicts the morning routines of many, what we didn’t know before is what time this was all happening. Thanks to a new custom survey from Edison Research, we now know exactly what time Americans 13+ wake up on weekdays..

Just over 30% of Americans 13+ are awake by 6am during the weekday. The two most popular half hour increments Americans set their alarms for are between 6am-6:30am and 7am-7:30am. Other data from Edison Research has shown most Americans are waking up slightly later than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic shifted routines and schedules to spend more time in the home. Edison’s flagship daily audio diary, Share of Ear, details a similar change in when people start their day as well as more insight into how they spend time with audio at home.

Ad-Supported Audio Trends From The Record

Audio choices abound for listeners but it’s only ad-supported audio where those listeners can be reached with advertising messages. The Record, a free report featuring Edison Research’s Share of Ear® data and Nielsen format data, provides a quarterly look at time spent with ad-supported audio by U.S. audiences ages 18+. Understanding this ad-supported space is important for advertisers, artists, broadcasters and podcasters alike. Click here for the Q1 2025 release of The Record.
