Smartphone Moms: “Say Cheese”
By mdecesare
Time flies, and we feel the full brunt whenever our children mark another milestone or celebrate a special event. Such occasions usually bring out the photographer in all of us, and June offers a jackpot of chances for the parental paparazzi crowd. End of school year concerts and ceremonies, as well as recitals and sports tournaments, make for a busy month with plenty of photo opportunities. With mobile devices so prevalent, it is easier than ever to aim, click and upload those special memories.
According to Moms and Media 2013, 64% of moms are now smartphone owners, and when there is a smartphone, there is also a camera.
Being a mom of two children, I have attended some of these special June events in the last few weeks and have seen firsthand a wave of smartphone cameras being wielded in the audience and on the sidelines by moms. This reflects what we saw in our recent Moms and Media report: that smartphone moms are more likely than the total smartphone owner population to use their smartphone camera. More than half of smartphone moms (54%) use the camera on their phone at least once per day to take pictures, compared to the 39% of the total smartphone population who said the same.
To the dismay of any camera-shy children, smartphone moms are rarely without their devices, with 89% saying their phone is within arm’s length at least “most of the time.” This means smartphone moms are just about always armed and ready for that special photo op. Capturing the big milestones and the everyday unexpected has never been easier.
Along with many other smartphone moms, I have a full appreciation for always having a camera on hand, although I suspect my children are not as supportive of this wonderful invention. When they age into a smartphone demographic I know they’ll understand, but for now they just tolerate “look at me,” and “say cheese” on a regular basis.
