The Summer Olympics are here, and this is the week countries around the world prepare to be compared on the basis of their athletic abilities, their artistic performances, and of course, their sponsored swag. Although podcast listening is not an Olympic sport, our research allows us to make our own comparisons of audio behavior between countries.
For eight years, Infinite Dial Australia has been tracking the same statistics as Edison Research’s flagship American Infinite Dial report. As the chart below shows, our Australian estimate for monthly podcast listening surpassed the number in the United States in 2022 and continues to run one percentage point ahead.
When we first looked in 2017, the Australian numbers tracked well behind those in the USA, and as recently as 2020 the Australian number trailed by twelve percentage points. Today, just under half of all Australians age 12 and over say they have listened to a podcast in the last month. Among many factors leading to the rapid rise in Australian podcast listening is the heavy promotion of podcasts by their radio companies, a proactive effort in controlling media disruption.
