Jack, Bob and “25-54itis” – Plus Your Thoughts on WCBS-FM

By Tom Webster

Perhaps the hottest topic in radio programming today is the burgeoning “Adult Hits” format, as exemplified by the high-profile switches of stations to “Jack,” “Bob,” and other similar formats. In a study of Arbitron data looking at stations with at least two full books in the format, Edison Media Research and Arbitron create a baseline of analysis for the new stations. The Jack/Bob phenomenon reminds us that it wasn’t so long ago that most major FMs chased the lucrative 25-to-54 demo and left all other listening on the table. The upshot was multiple AC, Country, and Oldies stations in a market and a dearth of Top 40, Urban or young-end rock stations. So with the recent loss of Alternative, Oldies and even some hip-hop stations, you have to wonder, has the “25-54itis” of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s returned? Finally, “last week’s appreciation of WCBS-FM”:http://www.edisonresearch.com/homeimg/archives/2005/06/wcbs-fm_a_final.html generated an overwhelming number of comments from all over the country. If you haven’t read this yet, we’d love to hear from you.
