Hanging Up The Phone

Since the advent of email, there have been many commentaries about the demise of the personal, handwritten letter as a form of communication. But in the last decade a parallel transformation has been occurring, without nearly so much comment – the demise of the personal phone call.

In our recent national study of 12-24s, we found that self-reported daily ‘time spent talking on the telephone’ dropped from an average of one hour and 44 minutes per day in the year 2000 to only one hour and four minutes in 2010. That’s a drop of 38% in time spent ‘talking’ on the phone in ten years.

Of course, we know full well that 12-24s haven’t stopped communicating, in fact they have vastly more ability to get the word out today through Facebook, texting, or even ‘old-fashioned’ email. Which begs the question – in an updated “Bye Bye Birdie,” just how would Ursula spread the word about Hugo and Kim going steady?
