Awareness of Location Based Social Networks Currently 7% Of Americans 12+

By Tom Webster

In our most recent Edison Research/Arbitron Internet and Multimedia research series, we took an extended look at a variety of social networking services (including Twitter, for which we will be releasing a special report next week–sign up today!) One of the hallmarks of this series has been to track the awareness and usage of a variety of sites and services with a nationally representative sample, sometimes well before these sites truly hit the mainstream. Our Twitter data, for instance, is based upon three years of tracking data, back when trying to project usage numbers would have netted you a great big fail whale.

With that in mind, we’re pleased to release this little factoid as another sneak preview of Twitter Users In America: 2010, our upcoming webinar and report on the popular microblogging service. We asked a random, representative sample of 1,753 Americans ages twelve and up if they were at least familiar with sites and services like Foursquare, Gowalla and others that allow one to post status updates AND location data. Based upon the results of this national telephone (landline and mobile) survey, seven percent of Americans have at least heard of social networking services that provide this feature.
